Gate of the Dead: The Solemn Passage into Angkor Thom's Past
The Gate of the Dead, also known as the Victory Gate, is one of the five gates that lead into the ancient city of Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Khmer Empire. This gate, located on the eastern wall of Angkor Thom, is unique for its historical and spiritual significance, often associated with the passage of funeral processions, hence its name.
Built in the late 12th century under King Jayavarman VII, the Gate of the Dead shares architectural styles with the other gates of Angkor Thom, including the iconic face towers representing the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. However, it holds a distinctive aura, partly due to its association with solemn ceremonies and its less frequented location.
Approaching the gate, visitors are greeted by a causeway flanked by statues of gods and demons, a theme recurrent in Angkor Thom's architecture. The gate itself is adorned with intricate carvings and bas-reliefs, including scenes from Hindu and Buddhist mythology.
The central tower of the gate, like the others in Angkor Thom, features the serene, smiling faces looking in the cardinal directions. These faces, believed to bear the likeness of King Jayavarman VII, convey a sense of calm and benevolence. The gate's towering structure and detailed stonework are testaments to the artistic and architectural prowess of the Khmer Empire.
The Gate of the Dead is less crowded compared to the South Gate, offering a more tranquil and reflective experience. It serves as a poignant reminder of the city's grandeur and the passage of time, inviting visitors to contemplate the history and legacy of the ancient empire.
