Discovering the Natural Wonders of Koulen National Park in Siem Reap

Koulen National Park, also known as Phnom Kulen or Kulen Mountain, is a breathtaking natural wonder and a significant cultural site located just a short drive from Siem Reap. This sacred mountain holds immense historical, religious, and natural importance, offering a serene escape from the bustling temples of Angkor.

The park, established as a protected area in 1993, spans approximately 373 square kilometers. It's revered as the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire, where King Jayavarman II proclaimed independence from Java in 802 AD. The mountain is considered holy by Hindus and Buddhists, with numerous ancient temples and religious artifacts dotting its landscape.

Visitors to Koulen National Park are treated to a diverse range of attractions. The area is famous for its natural beauty, featuring lush forests, stunning waterfalls, and unique geological formations. The most notable is the 1000 Lingas River, where hundreds of lingas (phallic symbols of Hindu god Shiva) are carved into the riverbed, blessing the water that flows to the Angkor temples.
