APSARA National Authority’s restoration team has completed the third phase of the restoration project of the southeast Bakan platform of Angkor Wat.

The third phase of the restoration project of the southeast Bakan platform of Angkor Wat began in early January 2023. The technical officer of the Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology, Mr. Kham Mony, said that his team has already repaired 292 broken stones, which were dismantled from each corner , and reorganized those stones to the original location.

Mr. Kham Mony said that in addition to repairing the broken stones in each corner and then re-arranging to the original location, the technical team also restored the damage to many other places such as pushing the separated stones together to strengthen the structure of the whole temple.
The southeast Bakan platform of Angkor Wat has been damaged by tree roots growing into the stone gaps and the foundation, causing the stones to tear apart as well as the rainwater flowing through the gaps into the foundation, causing the foundation to weaken and collapse.

The technicians expect that after the completion of the restoration, Angkor Wat’s Bakan Tower will be the main location for tourists to visit, so the experts must maintain this great heritage to increase the tourist attractions.
