Cambodia's largest Children's Community Arts Project will return to the streets of Siem Reap on 24th February 2024. A time of pure celebration, Since 2007, The Giant Puppet Project has been teaching children and youth that art can enrich their lives, give voice to their imaginations, ignite pride in their rich heritage and unite Communities.
In February, puppets will be paraded proudly down the streets of Siem Reap once more, where an anticipated 10,000 community spectators will cheer on the throngs of children, musicians and performers who electrify the night with their contagious joy and creative achievements...reminding us all what it means to be truly alive and part of something greater than ourselves.
Our Artist Team - all graduates from Phare Ponleu Selpak's Visual Arts School in Battambang - will soon be preparing the frameworks for next year's family of 9 giant puppets and are eager to welcome back the hundreds of children from numerous NGOs and Schools who will join the three-week puppet making workshops. The finale and culmination of all the children's efforts is the Street Parade which has been.
The type of puppets made are chosen to reflect elements of Cambodia's social, cultural and natural environments: from endangered animals like the Sarus Crane to cultural figures like Kong Nai and mythical creatures like the Snake Goddess found in Cambodian folklore.
Next Year's Puppets will be a unique theme. One that is universal and sparks imagination and wonder in all of us
