On August 19, 2024, the National Bank of Cambodia launched the “Bakong Tourist App” in Siem Reap to enhance payment services and support tourism. Attended by Dr. Chea Serey, the app is designed to simplify digital payments for international tourists, reducing the need for cash transactions.
Dr. Chea Serey explained that the app allows tourists to easily top up their Bakong account and link it to international payment cards. Payments can be made by scanning QR codes at approximately 3.3 million participating stores.
She noted that the app is part of broader banking reforms and aims to support Cambodia’s tourism sector while aligning with recommendations from Prime Minister Hun Sen. The app seeks to address challenges faced by tourists who often encounter difficulties with credit cards or cash.
Additionally, Prime Minister Hun Manet has directed the National Bank to work with private banks to eliminate the requirement for perfectly intact dollar bills, aiming to prevent issues for visiting tourists.
